The requirements for Full Birth Certificate application are as follows:
- A duly completed Form BI-154, for Full Birth Certificate
- A duly completed Form BI-130, for Marriage Certificate
- A duly completed Form BI-132, for Death Certificate
- A processing fee of $5.00 for each application made payable to the South African Consulate-General. Personal checks are not accepted.
Application forms must be completed in black ink.
Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates are processed in South Africa and processing period may therefore take approximately 3 to 5 months.
Persons born abroad to South African parents may avail of South African citizenship by descent through birth registration.
The requirements for Birth Registration application are as follows:
- Child's original full foreign birth certificate (Not the abstract Certificate)
- Father's original South African or foreign Birth Certificate and South African Identity Document, South African Naturalization Certificate or South African Birth Registration Certificate, if applicable
- Mother's original South African or foreign Birth Certificate and South African Identity Document, South African Naturalization Certificate or South African Birth Registration Certificate, if applicable
- Parents' original Marriage Certificate
- Complete BI-24 for the child (Complete in black ink only. No errors permitted)
- Complete BI-529 in respect of mother and father (Including grandparents information, Sections C and D) of the child NOT for the child
- Complete BI-154 in duplicate for the child and return with $2.00 money order for the birth registration and $5.00 for a South African Birth Certificate (Personal cheques & credit cards are not accepted)
- Photocopy of parents' Alien Registration cards (Green Card) or U.S. Visa
- Dual citizenship letter for South African parent, if citizenship of another country was obtained
The above documents must be original. Photocopies are not accepted.
Birth registrations are processed in South Africa and processing period may therefore take approximately 3 to 5 months.
In the case of a late birth registration (After the child's first birthday) processing could take up to one year and must be accompanied by a letter of explanation from the parents as to why the child's birth was not registered before his/her first birthday.
Kindly note that children born abroad are automatically allowed to maintain dual citizenship until the age of 18. At 18, to enable him/her to retain his/her South African citizenship, he/she must apply for Exemption in terms of Section (9)(2) of the South African Citizenship Act, Permission to make use of a passport of another country.
