MANDELA DAY - JULY 18

The South African Consulate General wishes to remind everyone to join the call
of the Nelson Mandela Foundation to devote 67 minutes of our time in pursuit
of a good cause in the service of others.

In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 18 July
"Nelson Mandela International Day" in recognition of the former South Africa
President's contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. This year on
18 July the UN is joining the Nelson Mandela Foundation's call to helping
others, as a way to mark Nelson Mandela International Day
 (http://www.un.org/en/events/mandeladay/).

Every year on his birthday, people globally dedicate their time towards serving
others to honor the sacrifices he made. Nelson Mandela gave 67 years of his
life in the struggle for justice. We invite you to share 67 minutes
of your time in helping others to mark Mandela Day 2011.

Please find 67 examples of ways to change at http://www.nelsonmandela.org/mandeladay/67_ways.html

AUGUST 2011

WOMEN'S MONTH

1 - 31 August

Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August.

The theme for Women’s Month this year is:

“Working together to enhance women’s opportunities to economic empowerment”

Women’s Day (9 August) recalls the day in 1956 when women from all races and walks of life marched to the Union Buildings in protest against oppressive apartheid laws.

This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.
