FORMER DEPUTY PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA’S VISIT TO LOS ANGELES

Former Deputy President of South Africa and ANC Deputy President, Mr. Jacob Zuma, was on a very successful visit to Los Angeles at the invitation of the African Diaspora Foundation from September 29 to October 3, 2005. 

Mr. Zuma who was met at the airport on arrival by a team from the African Diaspora Foundation, South African Consul-General Jeanette Ndhlovu and leading figures from the civil rights movement, was welcomed at UCLA by Professor Allen Roberts of the African Studies Department.

Mr. Zuma’s speech at the Peace Symposium at UCLA was well attended by students, faculty of UCLA and members of the media.  The Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace presented Mr. Zuma and Mr. Agrippa Ezozo with its prestigious “Ambassador of Peace” award during the symposium.

Following his successful speaking engagement at UCLA, he also addressed several organizations such as the World Affairs Council at the Regency Club (previous guests include former President Bill Clinton, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, King Abdullah of Jordan and His Royal Highness The Duke of York), First AME Church in Los Angeles and the Agape Spiritual Center.  He also made a few remarks at an event organized by the Urban Forum at the California African American Museum, where Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa gave a speech.

Mr. Zuma continued to spread his message of peace to listeners of KJLH, a radio station owned by singer Stevie Wonder.

While in Los Angeles, he was also invited by the City of Los Angeles to attend the International Music Festival featuring the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Africali Youth Group from Tanzania and Miriam Makeba.  Ms. Makeba was honored at this event for her role in the anti-apartheid struggle.
