MIRIAM MAKEBA EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH KATRINA SURVIVORS

The City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department honored Ms. Miriam Makeba for her role in the anti-apartheid struggle during the “Musics of the World Celebration Concert” which was held at the West Los Angeles Church on October 1, 2005.

Featured at the concert were Miriam Makeba, the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Africali Youth Group from Tanzania.

The performance of Ms. Makeba earned outstanding reviews both from the public and the media. A prominent article applauding Ms. Makeba’s great performance was published in the Calendar Section of the Los Angeles Times on October 3, 2005.

On the eve of her departure from Los Angeles to Havana, Cuba, Mama Africa met with Damon Batiste, Director of the New Orleans South African Connection and donated signed copies of her new book.  Mr. Batiste, who has been displaced by Katrina from New Orleans to Los Angeles, is part of the team that organized the Music Festival.  Mr. Batiste said "we can auction these books for up to $1,000 each to raise funds for the musicians affected by Katrina.

Mama Africa's appearance in Los Angeles was dubbed "a spiritual experience, flowing with style and substance" by the Los Angeles Times.
