South African writer-director Gavin Hood’s ‘Tsotsi’ won several prestigious awards, the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the Toronto Film Festival on September 17, 2005, the Standard Life Audience Award and the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2005.
The movie is a British-South African drama based on the novel by South African writer Athol Fugard, which was shot in a township outside Johannesburg. The stars of the film include Presley Chweneyagae, Terry Pheto, Kenneth Nkosi, Mothusi Magano and Zenzo Ngqobe, Zola, Jerry Mofokeng, Rapulana Seiphemo, Nambitha Mpumlwana, Ian Roberts and Percy Matsemela.
‘Tsotsi’ is South Africa’s official nomination for the 78th Annual Academy Awardsâ in the foreign language film award category.
